It’s time for a change

Hello and thank you for visiting Mulberry Muse.

I have been thinking a lot about my business and how to grow and adapt

despite the restrictions made by having ME/CFS and all of the health issues involved.

So many times I have been asked about digital downloads and I constantly wrestle

with the fear of letting my images into the hands of the unknown.

Too often they have been taken without my permission and it is heartbreaking knowing

how much effort went into their creation to be taken and used by others to make profit.

This year I think is time for a change of heart and I will allow some of my work to be sold digitally.

I hope to start with something special for Valentine’s day!

More about that another day, have a happy safe one wherever you are  in this world

The many faces of Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette by Wendy Patterson

Since 2007 I have been developing my skills retouching vintage and antique images

for use in my card and art print designs.

It takes many hours of work to repaint the faces and make them look beautiful.

Some of the vintage images are quite stern with many women

having five o’clock shadows and dark unattractive faces.

I developed one particular image for my Marie Antoinette character

and this face is seen in much of my work with different costumes and hairstyles.

The lady you see above.

I recently became aware that this face has been taken and used by another person,

it is not unusual for image theft on the internet.

It is nonetheless very upsetting to see her claiming this as her own work.

My Marie is also on journals, calendars, home wares and cards published by my

licensing partners so she is well known as my original creation.

I am very sad that this has happened and to the person who took her…

I am sorry you think it is ok to steal rather than create your own work.

Vintage images reborn, Marie Antoinette before and after

Wendys artworkMany of you may wonder where I find my Marie Antoinette and other

lovely vintage characters for my artwork and designs.

Well, most are readily available as public domain images in their original form.

However they undergo dramatic facelifts and costume changes in my hands,

working with photoshop and sometimes original watercolour and gouache.

Many hours of work goes into their transformation.

My goal is to achieve a visual harmony with the past and present

adding exquisite detail and charm.

I love to transform beautiful new characters from the old,

sometimes very shabby vintage images.

We are taking some time to rest over the next few weeks.

The shops may remain open, I have yet to decide on that,

but for those of you who do love to shop shipping will be delayed due

to post office closures over the holidays.

Wishing you all a wonderful, safe and peaceful festive season,

from all the characters at Mulberry Muse and their designer “Joyeux Noël” my dears…

Sad… copyright infringement

For me the internet is a double edged sword, an inspiring way to showcase my work

but sadly a source of great distress as I find more and more

of my images taken and used without my permission.

Taken not just by individuals but big companies as well.

Because I live with a chronic disabling illness, ME, it is my only realistic way to be

able to get my work seen and earn a modest income.

I am feeling so discouraged by finding yet more of my work blatantly taken

and used by other people for profit.

As an example I have shown in the images below the amount of work

and creative effort that is put into my designs.

The first image is of a fashion plate that is freely available for use online.

The second image is my reworking of that fashion plate.

As you can see the ladies face has been completely repainted, her clothing re coloured,

meticulously retouched and other items added to the pose.

This does not happen in a few minutes,

the work takes many hours and requires patience, talent and ability.

If you see my image offered as a free printable or part of a derivative work, it is a copyright infringement.

I have a new licensing partner which is an exciting development for home ware products.

My designs have been mostly used on paper goods, seeing them on home wares will be wonderful!

I am really looking forward to seeing the products they produce.

Christmas and Halloween cards are being designed for the holiday season which are fast approaching.

A few designs have made their way into my etsy shop.

I have chosen a pallete of aqua, cream and gold for this years holiday designs, with maybe a touch of red:)

I have deer, peacocks, an old favourite, Marie Antoinette, Jane Austen, fairies,

Regency themes and the new and beautiful Snow Queen…
